Terminology Module

The Terminology Module aims to enhance your theoretical and practical knowledge in the field of terminology and terminology management. The module has been especially tailored to meet the needs of linguists working with state-of-the-art tools in terminology, translation, and localisation, who need theoretical principles and practical knowledge to manage their terminologies. We assume you manage the basic ICT skills reviewed in the ICT Module courses offered in our project's web page.

Module Structure

The Terminology Module is divided into four courses:

  • Terminology (Basic Principles): provides the basic theoretical concepts and principles regarding terminology and terminology work and search
  • Principles of Terminology Management: gives an overview of the principles on terminology management and terminology management tools. It tackles issues such as the differences between terminology databases and translation memories as well as data categories and data elements
  • Working with Terminology Databases: deals with issues such as creating, populating, exporting, importing, maintaining and working with terminology databases
  • Working with SDL MultiTerm: taking SDL MultiTerm as an example of a terminology management tool, this course deals with the tool's characteristics, functionalities, editions, and its particularities compared to previous versions — such as MultiTerm 5.5.

Course Design

The courses offered in the Terminology Module consist of descriptive texts on terminology and terminology management tools, accompanied by practical exercises. Since there are several software applications on the market to perform terminology work, we have tried to develop courses that are as independent as possible of a particular application.

All courses contain images to illustrate the described processes. These images used were taken from the terminology management tool SDL MultiTerm iX which - apart from the layout and some extra funcitonalities - does not really differ from the newest version SDL MultiTerm 7.

All Terminology Courses were developed based on the idea of increasing the level of difficulty and tackle issues for beginners and intermediate users. The first course is aimed at translators and translation teachers who have minimal previous knowledge of Terminology. Each Terminology course is in turn a prerequisite for the following.

The practical exercises offered to test the knowledge you acquired through the courses can be done by using the sample materials available to download from each exercise's website.

Finally, you can navigate through the courses by using the menu on the left-hand side (where you can choose the sections) and by using the buttons Back (back) and Next (next) on the bottom of each page.

Feedback

Since we are constantly improving our courses, we would appreciate if you could leave us feedback by filling in the appropriate questionnaires. At the end of each Terminology Course you will find a link to the questionnaire of that particular course. To give us general feedback on our Website or the eCoLoTrain project, go to Materials/Feedback. Thank you!
